Default Loaded Die

While playing a game we came across a question about running away with a Loaded Die while you have penalty to run away.

The player had a total of -3 to run away, and two Loaded Die cards. When this player tried to run away would the -3 come into effect before or after the Loaded Die was played?

Since loaded die explicitly says to pick up the die and put it down with the number you want facing up, I'd say the penalty applies to the new value, just like if the die was rolled normally.

Not to be snarky... but that seems to make the Loaded Die useless. The Loaded Die (from The Good The Bad and The Munchkin) says to play after you roll the die- it seems to me that this means the -3 would be applied as well- i.e.- you roll a 4 then -3 for a 1 then play the Loaded Die and make it whatever number is most beneficial to your circumstance.

At least that's my understanding...

Loaded Die affects the actual number showing on the actual die. Any bonuses or penalties get applied to the number showing on the die. A -3 to Run Away means Loaded Die can't save you.

Well, yes, if you have a -3 to run away and nothing that can remove or reduce that penalty, then you can't possibly run away.

There are penalties less than -3, and there are bonuses to running away. Loaded Die is in most (if not all) Munchkin core sets.

Plus, it's not just when running away. It says whenever you roll the die. There's also times you want a low die roll.

A related question, then. Suppose I'm using the die roller in my Munchkin app. Since there's no way to pick up that die, does that make me immune to loaded die and afterwards reloaded die? It seems that the spirit of the law would be for the loaded die to allow me to announce the roll, have it then be subject to reloaded die, etc. Of course, munchkins only care about the letter of the law, unless the spirit works in their favor, ....

Or is this one of the corrections we can look forward to in the GUAL set?

Regards,
aeronaut

If you are using an electronic replacement for a die roll, Loaded Die and Reloaded Die may be used to tell you what your electronic die surrogate really rolled, not what the display claimed it rolled. But it must be a legal value for the type of die being rolled, and you still have to apply any bonuses or penalties to that number.

Can a player play the Loaded Die to affect another player's die roll?
