I'm now trying to match the cover font used on TFT, and I don't remember . . . . it may have been a Formatt rub-down. Anybody want to apply detective skills?

It is certainly not Old English Five http://www.1001fonts.com/old-english-five-font.html but OE5 has a very similar feel and imho better legibility.

It might be this one: EF Gotisch Bold DFR font

https://www.whatfontis.com/NFC_EF-Go....font?text=The

How: I used the "The" in "In The Labyrinth" in www.whatfontis.com, and eye-balled for the closest match (of the 60 suggested, it was number 6).

Looks really close, except for the lower-case "s".

This font looks even closer and has less of a lifp: Gothique MN font

https://www.whatfontis.com/NMY_Gothi...?text=In%20The

To get the same capital "I" as used in "In the Labyrinth", you'd have to use the "J" instead. Maybe the "J" was used instead of the "I" because it looked better (assuming this is the right font)?

It’s the Mecanorma Letter Press rub down font Gothique. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/mic...er/3373350202/

Here’s a very close digital font - https://www.fonts.com/font/internati...s-inc/gothique

I think that's exactly what happened. The Mecanorma letter press Gothique rub down sheet (sample at http://www.flickriver.com/photos/mic...er/3373350202/ ) looks like it had very few "I" glyphs. The sample has only three spaces that *might* have had "I" glyphs.

So it could be as simple as running out of "I" glyphs on the sheet Metagaming had. And the "J" glyph is identical to the "I" except for the bottom flourish. Since the "J" character is utterly unidentifiable as a "J", why not use it?

International TypeFounders licensed the Mecanorma typefaces, digitized them, and released them as the Mecanorma Collection. So that's about as close as you can get (without buying old rub down sheets off ebay). https://www.fonts.com/font/internati...s-inc/gothique

EDIT - confirmed. I obtained Gothique MN and overlaid it in Adobe Illustrator (as I did earlier for the body copy). The capital "J" is substituted for the capital "I" and the lowercase letters are in a point size 95% the size of the uppercase letters. Lowercase letters came on a different sheet, which might explain the size discrepancy. A perfect match, otherwise. Ridiculously obsessive analysis sent to Steve Jackson.
