Re: [Basic] Skill of the week: Surgery
My family doctor is still doing family medicine for philosophical reasons, but she does Obstetrics part time at the local hospital. I don't know if in Canada that includes C-Section... but I can understand why they might get One Task Wonder training (or technique training) in C-Section in some systems - they're most likely to be on hand. In an urban environment this doesn't matter as much, but in more rural areas the family doctor is also the Ob/Gyn because there's no hospital around for miles and miles. Or even other doctors - although there are probably RNs and midwives.

Without that inner voice saying, "Stop that.", when faced with immersion breaking write ups, I doubt many RP games could survive for long. Remember the old all mages have exactly IQ 14 and Magery 3 just to get that 1 pt. 15 spell skill?

Re: [Basic] Skill of the week: Surgery
The only mage I ever played had Magery 3 and IQ 11 since he was a child and Magery is set from birth in that setting, for 1 point to have a professional spell skill level of 12. Most NPC mages had Magery 2 and IQ 12 or were elves with racial Magery 1.

Re: [Basic] Skill of the week: Surgery
House rules of course lead to difference of rules. But those playing with default Magic quickly see how optimal the IQ 14, Magery 3 is.

Re: [Basic] Skill of the week: Surgery
Why would that be optimal with the default Magic rules? IQ 10, Magery 7 is significantly less expensive, allows the learning of spells faster and allows you to spend more FP on spells.

Re: [Basic] Skill of the week: Surgery
Archetypical mages do tend to have a variety of traits *other* than spells that are helped along by IQ... high Will, supporting skills like Thaumatology and Occultism, that kind of thing.

If you happen to specifically want such a character, it will of course be most efficient to buy IQ, but that does not mean that IQ 14, Magery 3 is an obvious choice for mages in general. |
