Not all dentists can prescribe drugs. I used to have to take a large dose of antibiotics before every cleaning since I had scarlet fever as a child, and my dentist always had her husband, a dental surgeon, write the prescription.

I don't know how this would affect the skills required to build a dentist character, but it seems worth mentioning.

I'm not questioning the veracity of your experience, but I wonder if that wasn't due to unique circumstances. The ability to prescribe medication for oral health issues seems fairly standard for dentists in the U.S. I would suspect hat either your dentist couldn't prescribe antibiotics because scarlet fever is out of her scope of practice, or there was some sort of restriction on her license for some reason.

This may also be a regional issue; I'm not sure where Janos is, but I'm posting from Canada, as an example. OTOH, I can't contribute much about Canadian dentists and the scope of their prowess, because I seem to have a set of neglect-proof teeth.

I can vouch that dental surgeons in Canada have prescribing powers; I had to visit a dental surgeon to have my wisdom teeth out, as they had barely appeared on an X-Ray by the time they were extracted... the key to being raced ahead in line appears to be the magic words "...but my insurance expires next month!"

As a point of interest, dental surgery doesn't appear to be covered by our provincial healthcare system - or at least not completely, for things like wisdom tooth extraction. I would like to think that an abscess (life threatening) would be, but I'm sort of frightened to ask. It's an obnoxious gap, considering that some aspects of dental healthcare can be critically important.

Same here. I go to a sedation dentist, licensed for anesthesiology. That means he has the enhancement Delay on that Affliction advantage.

Sounds like your dentist passed up the Affliction advantage for Social Regard. Only so many points, after all, but you know that's not how most players would spend 'em.

I think it's Diagnosis, Physician and Surgery, all with (Dental) specialisations. This is discussed in the Skill of the Week thread on Surgery.

I think I have Resistant (Dental procedure discomfort). I've had more than one dentist suddenly stop a procedure and ask if I was still awake, because they thought I had a reaction to the anesthesia and passed out. I was just lying there daydreaming.

Had braces as a teen. Really teaches you to ignore what's happening in your mouth.
