And just to be sure what's a good rule of thumb to know what cards can be equipped, even in an unused position, and those that cannot be? I mainly ask because you cannot equip 1 time use items correct?

You can carry them sideways as long as they have a Gold Piece value. The disadvantage is that people know you have them, an thieves could steal them.

The terms that we try to consistently use are carried and used, when it comes to Items. All Items that you have in play are carried, not equipped. Equipped might be a better word choice for the carried Items that you are currently using.

One-shot Items are Items, and there is absolutely nothing in the rules that should indicate that they can't be carried. Furthermore, the rules go in to detail in at least two different locations to say that one-shot Items may be played from the table (i.e., as a carried Item), or from your hand.

Okay so they must have a Gold Piece value? Because there are 1 shot items that do not have Gold Piece value and that would force the player to keep those cards in their hand.

There are no 1-shot items that do not have a Gold Piece value, for the simple reason that, if they have no Gold Piece value, they aren't an item. (Always keeping in mind that "No Value" printed on the card counts as a Gold Piece value.)

There ARE one-shot CARDS that aren't items, and yes, they must be played from your hand.

If it doesn't have a gold piece value it simply a 1 shot card, not actually an item

Edit: Mister Ed beat me to it
