Welcome to rpgs and GURPS in particular. While there is 'timing' it's not so finely machined as all that.


And as I said, you don't have to like the way the spell works, or even think it's a 'good' trap, but that's how it works. It's better when you realize most people do not burst open doors in one second, unless they are in combat.

Outside of combat adventures (in a say a dungeon environment) might slowly open doors to keep the hinges from squealing, or to immediately stop should they start making noise, or to peek into the room and close the door if necessary.

There are a myriad of reason one's hand might linger on the doorknob for far longer than a few seconds. One is if the lock is being picked.


Also, about half of most adventurers don't start out with Combat Reflexes. There are just too many other things that are needed.

Only 2 Professions (out of 11) in DFRPG are guaranteed it. However, admittedly the rest either have it available to buy or have a starting IQ of 14 (the caster Professions).

Though again, it is a straight IQ roll, so it's not hard to notice even for IQ 10 no Combat Reflexes Characters.


On the trap note, it can be tied to Watchdog to trigger a spell if someone crosses that spells border, so other 'sensing' type spells could also be used as the trigger (as long as they have a "alert' type component). Or even just a "if anyone enters this room, crosses this spot, etc; trigger spell".

Delay is really good for precasting big ticket spells that are slow to cast or FP expensive, getting them out of the way for later use in the thick of it. The difference between Hang and Delay is that Delay is tied to a trigger, so the Wizard could Delay a Teleport to send himself somewhere safe in the event that he falls unconscious. Or whatever. Where Hang is better for spells the Wizard wants to "prepay/pre-spend the time casting" and then finish casting discretely when he wants to.
