Default Munchkin Songwriter quick question

Hi everyone! My friends and I are having fun with Munchkin Rick and Morty. Just had a quick question about the Songwriter class. One of my friends argued with the first ability that he could use the ability on someone else's item when we were trying to stop someone from going out to double the bonus against it (making it +8 instead of +4) even though he didn't own it, it was another player's one shot item. He said the writing on the card doesn't mean you have to own it to use the ability, it and ultimately I couldn't argue against it so I played another card so we could wrap up the combat and continue the game. Is he right or am I missing something? "Once per combat, you may make up a rhyme for a One Shot item to double its bonus" Thanks in advance for the help.

Default Re: Munchkin Songwriter quick question

It has to be an Item you're playing. It's way too powerful otherwise.
