Default TFT - identical to the old one? Updated?

I've the originals - lots of fun.

Wondering if a few of the rules anomolies and problems were cleared up. I think we figured out that a charging halberd pretty much won the game.

Curious if the mechanics were cleaned up a bit and updated - it was easily 95% of the way to PERFECT!!

We offer Melee as a free PDF. I suggest checking that out.

Personally, I'd summarize it as:
  • clarifications and fixes for combat
  • talent changes and more talents: weapon expertise/UC, a lot more social/utility talents
  • changes to how experience works, like separate XP costs for talents and session-based XP
  • major enhancements to magic: mana staffs, a lot more spells
  • clarifications and limitations on certain magic (wishes, gates, attribute items, etc.)
  • a lot more world info: a ton more creatures, more geographic descriptions
  • much improved packaging: more professional presentation, more art, color maps, merged book for ITL, Advanced Melee, and Advanced Wizard
  • lower cost -- the three books were $15 in 1980 and according to Google, that should be around $47 today but it's only $35 for the hardcover book

There is also a $29.95 softcover offered through Amazon print-on-demand. This helps those outside of the United States to save on shipping costs.

Wow, even better, that's less than $10 in 1980 dollars!

  • While there are other uses for XP the attribute costs go out of control around 40 total attributes
  • Several useful spells have been added that roll vs IQ or in the case of advanced staves roll at a DX bonus.
  • There are now several talents that are balanced at moderate levels of IQ but can be overpowered with superhuman IQ.
  • Wizards have staff Mana in addition to Powerstones to pay spell costs instead of ST.
  • The tight cap on total attributes combined with the advantages of superhuman DX and IQ makes raising ST to the extremely high level of human average a career crippling move. (ST 10 is almost worth it for a Master Fencer, but other builds will avoid it.)
  • A sufficiently experienced character can easily afford the memory points to become an unarmed combat master, but few players will be foolish enough to raise the ST attribute up to the prerequisite level.
  • The adventures haven't been fully converted to the new system.
You're injecting your editorial prejudices again. You're welcome to talk about them, but I'd just suggest using a dedicated thread instead of bringing it up in every thread from a new player of the new edition.
