As for the metaphysics of the dead, I hadn't given it much thought. Clearly death is necessary, but the Thirteen would be about preserving life if we're not twisting the source material too much. Maybe the honored dead become Companions of one of the Thirteen in the afterlife? That seems more thematically appropriate than granting one of them a special power over the souls of the dead.

Hm. Maybe the fertility and psychopompic aspects are actually taken on by the mystic Hall of the Gods, itself an independent entity loyal to (or possibly directing?) the Thirteen. Doorways to the Hall can appear anywhere, but are always blue, of course.

Is this the pantheon of the Thirteen Talk Show Hosts?

No, but if you Google that quote you should get it.

There isn't nearly enough death and regeneration in this pantheon.

I haven't exactly gone into great detail on the myth cycle.

I do wish I knew more about Eight. I've read a couple of his novels and seen the TV movie, but I don't have any familiarity with the audio dramas, so I don't really know how he developed.

You're thinking of hippos, I suspect; hippopotamus is literally Greek for "river horse."

But for all I know they described rhinos as horselike too. Early European ideas of taxonomy were imprecise. Leg at each corner? Can't milk it? Doesn't bark? Sounds like a horse to me.

Now that would be a specialty product for the insanely rich to obsess about. Imagine the cost of cheese made from Rhino milk? It might make people more willing to save the creatures rather than hunt them down for their horns.
