Default DFRPG Retreating to get out of Area Attacks

P50

Quote:
If an area effect, explosion, or cone (Area and Spreading Attacks, pp.45-46) goes off, you may retreat or dodge and drop to move away from that attack instead of from a foe. Roll a dodge at +3. Defense Bonus is irrelevant

So you can retreat from area effect, explosions and cones?

Anyone have any insight into why this change was made?

This doesn't look like a change to me? You can retreat behind cover, or dodge and drop reduce your distance from the center of an explosion (and thus damage).

The dodge roll doesn't actually evade the damage, it's just to determine if you get behind cover in time.

There is no retreat in Basic Set.

It is dodge and drop

I think the chambara rules in martial arts allowed retreating out of explosions. It matches the ‘reflex save’ of various d20 based games in the genre, so it makes sense for that option to be a default for the dfrpg.

Though it does let you move. The big difference is that you wind up prone in basic set.

Because not being allowed to take a Step away from an explosion is foolish.

I've always allowed it, so I didn't even notice this change.

I always assumed that the Basic Set rules were inartfully phrased, and always assumed you would be dealing with explosive attacks that had significant fragmentation. Since dropping prone behind cover is an excellent way of surviving against fragmentation, the rules just assumed that was what you would want to do.

On the forums, when people pointed out that they'd like to be able to dodge fireballs and dragon's breath without ending up prone, Kromm has generally been supportive of the idea that you could Dodge and Retreat without Dodging and Dropping. I can't find any quotes on the subject, but I'm fairly sure I've seen it.

So my guess is that this change was made, like several other changes in DFRPG, in order to bring the rules more in line with the original intent of the Basic Set rules.
