Avada Kedavra curse

I want to ask this because there was confusion with this curse. I know its pretty straight forward but my friend took it a different way. If you do not have an ally do you die like the curse says? Or does it just get discarded like getting a lose a small item curse and u dont have a small item to lose kinda rule?
