Hm. I wonder if you can uniformly tile a hyperbolic surface with octagons.

I think you'd need a specific size of octogon for a specific hyperbolic curvature. But ultimately, yes.

I once had a player obsess about a potted plant I put on the map for some reason.

This is on a par with the parties that spend ages digging up dead ends in dungeons because they won't accept that there isn't a secret door there.
If don't put it there, your players complain they are fighting spherical cows in a perfect vacuum, if you do, they apply the rule of Chekov's Gun and assume that it has significance.

None of my players play cartographers so there's no real reason for them to be in charge of maps. They do request maps from time to time to get a good visual and they'll jot on a scrap paper to show me where they are or what they're setting up.
