You know, I was thinking of an unconventional way to run this sort of game....

Your PCs play both D'ni characters before the fall, and visitors after. When playing as D'ni, they roll against IQ to solve puzzle locks. When playing after the fall, they have to actually figure it out. The D'ni side takes place over decades of expanded time and has a lot of construction and writing, while the chosen are more continuous and exploratory.

It gives PCs a lot of OOC knowledge, certainly, but skilled players can overcome that. The main advantage is that it segregates the "creating" and "exploring" aspects so that while players are able to create worlds and explore them together, that exploration has the slightly claustrophobic, abandoned feeling that fits Myst.

Oooh. I'm digging that idea. The time gap would also bring a sense of "what happened to my character?!" if (when) their Ages turned out disastrous.
