I've been playing it that you can add as many monsters as you have cards to discard. That seems to be how the text reads. I also somewhat accepted the power of it to go along with the idea that the mask is the main item sought after by the BBEG in the movie.

That's how we played it, but if you think about it to discard 1 card to give yourself +1 level / +X treasures in combat (if it's a small monster on top) or +8-20 to the monster's side (if it's a big monster on top).
If you compare it other abilities that use 1 card: - +1 to your combat (warrior) - +2 to your combat against an undead monster (cleric) - 50% chance to steal 1 small item + 50% chance to lose a level (thief) - -2 to player side in combat (thief) - +1 to run away (wizard) - Reroll a failed run away attempt (halfling) - Bard ability |
