Re: K9 enemies...
And I'm different in some ways, I went to high school in an area that had huge (100+) sized packs of wild dogs that would roam through the area and attack other pets (including dogs) as well as the occasional person by themselves if they weren't obviously armed.
I rather like having dogs as a "monster" type. They can be very vicious and players tend to underestimate them.

Note that some cultures eat dogs... but the slaughter is usually done out of sight even there. Hell, some people eat apes - and all the great apes can learn to use sign language; a few chimps have taught other chimps a few signs, even. (Gibbons, the lesser ape genus, haven't been used for language studies that I've seen.) Then again, there's "A Boy and His Dog"... (1975, staring Don Johnson)... |

Re: K9 enemies...
This is one of those things that makes no sense to me. I can see dogs as useful things, as guide dogs or sheep dogs, but the idea of making friends with them is just repulsive. There are relatives I have not visited for decades, mainly because they keep dogs.

Re: K9 enemies...
I'm curious. Is it just dogs or the entire concept of pets that repulse you?
Off topic, but it goes to show how personal culture may differ quite strongly with general local culture.

Re: K9 enemies...
Most games use wolves instead of trained attack dogs because most people see dogs (unless rabid) as pets instead of enemies. The other advantage of using wolves is that you can have them attack in packs and use strategy.

Re: K9 enemies...
Western history does have a lot of evil wolves in stories.
Even though feral dogs exhibit far more cunning in their understanding of human behavior than any wolf every did.

Re: K9 enemies...
I'm not exactly repulsed by dogs, but I certainly wouldn't want to take care of one and I don't assume pet dogs of strangers are safe. Feral dogs are just scary, rabies is a real nasty disease. While I'm a bit more positive to cats in theory (I grew up on a farm with mousers) I'm still going to wary in practice.
EDIT: I just realised that I have a cat profile picture. Despite the above I quite like cat pictures. :) |

Re: K9 enemies...
Rabies is horrifying. But I'd still fear the non-diseased pack of feral dogs more than a single Cujo.
I think one issue with cats is that few have experience with truly feral ones. They think they know how wildly aggressive and strong they can be when trying to get them into carriers. But in my limited experience, that is nothing compared to a true psycho/fighting for its life feral. And they are insanely fast too.
