Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher
The Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher shows damage of 4d pi++ which presents a different interpretation of grenade launchers from B281 where we find 4d(10) cr ex[2d].
I'm trying to figure out why the Ultratech grenades don't show explosive damage. |

Re: Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher
For all projectile weapons, UT gives the damage for a solid, non-explosive projectile (UT p 135, last sentence of the second paragraph) but you can replace the projectile with something else from pp 152-159.
So a TL9 25mm URGL does 4d pi++ if you hit the target with an inert warhead, but 8d cr ex inc with a thermobaric warhead, or 4d [1d+1] cr ex with an HE warhead. It's a little non-intuitive, since Basic and High Tech give the damage for a typical useful warhead and give damage for alternate warheads in the notes. But it is explained if you read closely.

Re: Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher
Also, you're comparing a modern 40mm grenade launcher to an ultratech 25mm grenade launcher.

HT, on the other hand, is not trying to be generic. It has to account for the fact that this 40mm round has 15% more powerful filler than that 40mm round.

Re: Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher
I didn't write, and don't believe, that UT's method was wrong or bad. As you say, it's very appropriate for UT. But it is a very large shift if you're coming from High-Tech or Basic, and although it is explained, the explanation is easy to miss unless you're reading very closely. So I said it was non-intuitive, which I think is fair.

Re: Ultratech underbarrel grenade launcher
Training grenades are not solid shot (the ones I can find contain paint); there are also a few less-than-lethal containing things like rubber balls or sponge grenades. You don't want something solid for training because the ballistics are totally different.

The blue ones are just a hollow body.

Tear gas grenades are fired through window glass. They need a base kinetic damage to tell the bad guy how much to reinforce his windows. :)
