What is the Size of OGRE Game Counters?
I have down loaded a bunch of information on this game prior to jumping in big time and can not find the actual size of the counters. i have read about 1/2 inch and 1 inch counters but can not seem to determine which size is correct for the counter versions of the games.
Thank You |

Re: What is the Size of OGRE Game Counters?
The original counters were 1/2" square, up until around 2013, when superseded by Ogre Designers Edition (the huge Kickstarter). At that point they went with roughly hex shaped counters (some had curves, too), that are larger than the original ones (and in color, too!).
The "Classic Counters" set sold via W23 are 1" square, a new size, but old school feel. |

Re: What is the Size of OGRE Game Counters?
IIRC, the ODE/sixth edition scale hexes are approximately 1.5" across (face-to-face). The new style counters are mostly hexagonal shaped to cover anywhere from about half of a hex to the entire thing, with a few units being irregularly shaped due to size and shape of the unit, not to mention most Ogres being larger than 1 hex even though they don't occupy more than 1 (convention states that the front half of the Ogre sits in the hex it occupies, with the back end being ignored for gameplay purposes, but you can place them however you want as long as everyone agrees :))
Realistically, it doesn't matter what size counters you use as long as everyone knows what they represent. You can use original 1/2" counters on the large map (they will just look tiny), and while it's probably impractical there's no reason you couldn't use the larger counters on the small maps if you had to...

Here is a link to the Classic Counters. Now is a perfect time to order them as well.

They have the added benefit of fitting better for stacking purposes. The original counters on an ODE map let you see everything that's in the hex much more easily.

At the cost of having to lean over and squint rather than "unstacking" a pile. ;) There's pros and cons to each method, so use whatever you feel most comfortable with.

One of my favorite combos is the 1/2 counters on the Ogre: Deluxe Ed (1987) board. The hexes are just a little bit bigger but the board is still manageable on a small table.
