Default Thief Card Question

This is probably a stupid question but...
A thief needs to discard a card to backstab, on the card it says that you can only do this "once per victim per combat but if two players are fighting a monster together, you may backstab each of them"

Would this mean you would have to discard 2 cards to backstab two players in a fight together (or 3 if three were fighting etc.)?

You must discard one card for each munchkin you want to backstab. One card for one munchkin, two cards for two munchkins. You cannot have more than two munchkins fighting a monster.

Thanks. That was the most logical choice, but as the FAQs have said:
