Virtual GURPS
Fright checks have been failed and the pandemic has driven us into our separate homes. What now for our heroes?
For the first time in decades of gaming, we're considering moving our sessions to cyberspace. We're all total noobs when it comes to this. What advice do you have? What software is best for GURPS online? We're not looking for play-by-post but rather, real-time, virtual role playing: Cheat-resistant dice rolling, easy hex grids, minimum-lag audio-video communication, etc. We have a mix of PC and Mac users. Thanks for your help. |

Re: Virtual GURPS
Both roll20 and Discord are sufficent. Those are the two I have used. Discord is the more robust chat and audio client: there are fewer issues and more powerful tools for just talking with others. Roll20 has better RPG support, takes less finagling to make rolls work, and has a tactical map.
I've also found google docs to be invaluable.

Re: Virtual GURPS
For those that don't play with a hexmap, you could use a voice chat option like Discord voice chat alongside a chatroom with dice (like Rolz.org) to roll dice visible to everyone, "pass notes" to individual players, and share links to handouts.

Re: Virtual GURPS
It's more of a quick overview than a deep analysis, but I have some thoughts here on playing via Discord only, Discord + Roll20, or Discord + Fantasy Grounds.
They all work pretty well depending on the game, hope you find something that works for your group!

Imagine it as a virtual table top. Nothing more, nothing less. It's just a a 3d Space. If you know Lua (I think), you can do some scripting and stuff, but, I don't know it. And we have a Mac user (my usual tech support for her is "first, buy a PC," but that's just my old PC/Mac wars injury flaring up). It usually works well for her. |
