Re: Cargo capacity of a 260-ton schooner

Displacement tonnage became an important measure in the 1920s and 1930s, for warships. It was a much more useful measure of capability for warships of the time (heavy armour, heavy guns) than it is for cargo vessels, but it looks more "scientific."

Re: Cargo capacity of a 260-ton schooner
Based on what little information we have I'm guessing that the cargo capacity is well under 260 tons . . .
As a quick guess, take the 258 Ton as a VERY TOP weight (before sinking) and subtract the weight of the vessel. There you go! But you'll need a safety buffer, less weather . . . But for a quick 'educated' guess, I'm guessing 50 tons (100,000 lbs)? (emphasis on the word "guess"). I can tell you how much weight a Duce and a Half Truck can carry. (Two and a half tons). And a Half Ton Hummer can carry 1000 lbs. Any rate most land based cargo vehicles can carry about 25% of their total Gross Vehicle Weight. That GVW 2,000 lbs car that your driving? Don't try to carry more than 500 lbs in that! (Pax OR Cargo). I'm feeling pretty good about that 50 tons for the ship. It's only 20% of total displacement and historically we started using boats for cargo because of how good they were at doing so. Just don't go over that Total Displacement Number!
