That book is chock full of stuff like sea monsters and krakens, though the author is not overly credulous. He seems to buy the Yateveo while dismissing the more outlandish features and I checked krakens and he seems skeptical there, too.

I haven't really wasted my afternoon looking at it, as grading really is calling. The author is known mostly for writing on cowboy legends, but this isn't his only Expert Naturalist text. A polymath, I guess.

Pretty sure this is not representative of the state of biology in 1887.

(To keep this on-topic, there appears to be a whole section on dwarves. Okay, it's really about African pygmies, but the author and the sources he quotes use the term "dwarf" throughout. Elves and orcs are sadly overlooked.)
