I sometimes worry that my cat would run from a sufficiently determined mouse.

Right, but look at the size difference: A cat is a few hundred x the weight of a mouse, let alone the difference of a human! Animals smaller than hare regularly terrify them. Shrews are poor comparisons, the eat 5x their weight every day!

only it the most loose definitions of Roc. the Normal definition of Roc is a large bird of prey, where bird of prey is defined as a group of birds that 'looks like a hawk or eagle'

PS... remember a Hare is NOT a rodent. so is not quite the same as "sufficiently determined mouse"

That's not the definition of 'Bird of Prey' I'm familiar with, that sounds more like 'Raptor' to me.

Which Wikipedia calls the same thing. but their deftion of Bird of Prey AND raptor both also include Condors/Vultures and Owls (but excludes Storks and Pengiuns)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_prey
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raptor

But yes I consider a Roc to be a gaint Accipitriform or more precicly a Accipitridae

plus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roc_(mythology)

BTW there WAS a bird like that! the Haast's Eagle

Another trait they have is Fur [1] as they unlike horse don't risk sunburn

Not that it makes that any better as a trait for mounts...
Really? I'd think it'd be a good thing, if you have to bring food for your mount it lasts twice as long.

I think it might be a size thing? Visually speaking, with their great big fluffy tails, Squirrels look to be about half the size of some rabbits.

I had a cat that liked to "gorilla" posture if an animal was securely in a cage or behind a glass door. But the moment it looked like someone might open it, he left skid marks. Made all the funnier, because he was freakishly strong. He knocked a full grown man down after kicking off from a wall, and that man was braced for impact.
But our kitties aren't killing for a living.

I meant away from cats in a general they live here way. Not away as in the cats are right there next to them. That would be much scarier, I admit.

Okay, since real tree shrews are not native to Oregon, I have been calling this species by the wrong name. I can't seem to find a picture that looks right, but it definitely is shrew-ish, but not quite as bulky or proper predator in my aesthetics. So its behavior seemed wrong for its appearance, despite my many watchings of nature shows.
