New spell question
I'm trying to place a set of spells that normally I would call Ward vs X
The basic effect is similar to repel animals, but the animal college just doesn't seem appropriate to Vampires or other beings. Pentagram protects against innately magical beings, but looking to place protection spells for beings that occupy the between areas. |

Re: New spell question
Mind Control is another choice. Compare with Avoid and Suggestion (M140)
If you want to ward mindless things, then Movement or Body Control might serve. What's the in-setting "fluff text" for how the Wards supposedly work? |

I'm just uncertain where in the other colleges to place them. Looking for advice on: Vampires, Were (being), Faerie, Ghost, and any other mythological beings of folklore not explicitly a spirit or demon covered by pentagram I suppose. Related question: Do humans count as a class of animal? |

Any of those would also fit into Protection & Warning, but that doesn't help much as usually you wouldn't have a chain of prerequisites that fits (mostly) into that college. Note that there will be little incentive to use a set of different spells if Avoid and Pentagram are available. Even the former works on supernatural beings that are not immune to mind control and the latter is pretty all-purpose if a bit fiddly to use and expensive to set up on larger areas.

Re: New spell question
Protection from Evil/Good (and Order/Chaos for that matter) appear to be both Meta-Magic and Protection and Warning, so I would assume a Protection from Undead might be both Necromancy and Protection and Warning.

Re: New spell question
Repel (Animal) and Repel Hybrids aren't Protection & Warning spells, for what it's worth.

Re: New spell question
Not only can a spell appear in multiple colleges, it's also possible to split the spells between various colleges. "Vampires, Were (being), Faerie, Ghost" are all humanoid creatures with intelligence, which is why Mind Control seemed like it might be appropriate.
"Any other mythological beings of folklore" covers quite a lot of territory, and some of those beings won't have "minds" (in some sense). You could either imagine a fairly basic fear/dread response -- even animal creatures below IQ 6 have brain chemicals that cause them to feel fear -- and call that either "mind" or "body" control as you like. (If Body Control's ST boost is supposed to work like adrenaline, then you can justify some "mind" effects with similar handwaving.) So you might rename "Repel Animal" to "Wards vs Animal" to match the rest of the series, or perhaps add some more spells for more fantastic animals to that college. I'd probably cross-list them all in Protection and Warning, especially if warding is a specific specialty or area of study in the setting for defensive or guardian mages, but the prereqs probably come from a variety of colleges. (This is what I meant by considering the fluff text. It doesn't matter for the mechanics, but for the feel of the setting, it can sometimes be useful to think about how what the magic is theoretically supposed to be doing and why. If the explanation for everything is "*shrug* it's magic", then there's not even an in-setting reason to divide spells up into colleges, and so the choice doesn't matter. If a variant rule such as per-college skills for ritual magic is in use, then the assignment matters more.) |

Re: New spell question
So this is what I've got so far:
Ward vs Vampire College: Necromantic/Protection-Warning Prerequisites: Sense Life, Terror Ward vs Were (being) College: Animal/ Protection-Warning Requisites: Repel (animal), Terror Ward vs Ghost College: Necromantic/Protection-Warning Prerequisites: Turn Spirit Ward vs Faerie- As stated before each type of Faerie would require some specific toolings. But for the larger catagories, Ward vs Sidhe (Noble Faeries) College: Protection/Warning Prerequisites: Suspend Magic, Fear Ward vs Goblin (Earth faeries) College: Protection/Warning/ Earth Prerequisites: Earth to Air, Fear Each type of Fae would need to find a branch with a prerequisite spell is about controlling their antithesis. |
