Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
Try 17th century for maps. 15th century, the area didn't have a lot of westerners. 16th century might have some maps, but I wouldn't hold up high hopes.

Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
GURPS Age of Napoleon has some discussion of the Age of Sail, including abstracted rules for nautical combat. It's for Third Edition, but might still be worth the look, and the PDF is cheap ($7.99) if you're interested.

Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
Ha! Thanks. I completely forgot I even had a link to it in my sig. I really need to get my pirate reenacting forum up and running again, even though I've taken a sabbatical from reenacting.
As for maps, besides the link mentioned above the Library of Congress has a few images too. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html Sadly, the people I work for (Marine Chart Division of the Office of the Coast Survey) don't have anything from that era. We have a historical chart collection site, but we didn't come along until 1807, and didn't really get to surveying until the 1840s. When I finally run my grand pirate campaign, for a bit of a twist I may use modern charts for GM purposes, and make the players use period charts. You can find our modern chart collection, along with those from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, at our online chart viewer website. |

Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
Hey, thanks for the links. I grew up reading some of those charts, but didn't know where to get them. And grew up watching people with expensive boats not read those charts, with the expected results.

Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
I had an age of sail mini-campaign last winter. Going through the new low-tech books & the pirate crew book there are basic stats for a lot of generic ships. Sloop, Brig, Cog, Hulk, Bermuda Sloop, Sloop of War, & Frigate.
As for weapons there are plenty of stats for small arms, swivel guns, ship's guns from 4 pdr to 42 pdr, and field guns from 3 pdr to 24 pdr. I compiled them into two spread sheets. If you would like them I could PM them to you. |

Re: Recources for the Age of Sail?
The map from the Pirates computer game was reasonable to give to the players. You should use one of the historicals to precisely locate shoals and such.
