The background more or less given, one being a new rich merchants son, and the other from an old rich rural gentry. The characters can have rivalry, odd friendship or whatever. Johnson is associated with middle class London and Austen is associated with rural gentry so I was trying to get an idea of the background to be imagined.

Not sure. Something like it is certainly needed for later periods but a lot of it comes under Seamanship for the Napoleonic period. I left it out of my post because the skill lists were already fairly long.
