Re: The unofficial new units thread
When I first read GURPS Ogre, my first impulse was to see how many Ogre missiles I could cram onto the smallest, fastest platform possible. Removing the turret and gun from a Light GEV I was able to place 3 disposable missile tubes, each containing one unarmored Ogre missile, for a tiny difference in mass. At first I didn't see how they could possibly fit on the miniature until I realized that the external missile tubes on an Ogre are massively armored and that I was not seeing the missile but the armor it is protected by.

Re: The unofficial new units thread
I was going through my 6mm minis the other day (I just DL'd the new OGRE Minis rules and am trying to decide what projects to finish and which ones to scrap)
I have an assortment of figures from Fortress Figures Heavy GEV tank: Could represent the HGEV from Last of the Red-Hot Coelacanths But when I plugged the values for that HGEV into the Cobb-a-nator I got a value of 6 2/3 VP, okay more than one Armor Unit but much less than 2, so we could beef that up a bit. If we make our Fortress Heavy GEV M4/3, D3, A4/2. Worth 2 armor units. (10.18 henrys) it jives better with the 2 unit (12vp) cost I mated the missile racks from GW whirlwinds to Fortress Figures Heavy GEV tank chassis and got a usable GEV-MSL Figure this conversion at M4/3, D3, A3/4. Worth 2 armor units. (this comes in at 12 henrys exactly) The light GEV Tank made by Fortress works as a standard GEV (no new stats needed) The GEV Missile Carrier is like a missile crawler but moves like a GEV, I haven't really built these (I use them as bitz for conversions) so I may just use the Chassis for command vehicles and the missiles as the basis of a missile crawler. I use these vehicles as the basis of my Israeli forces. I envision the IDF of the Last War as a largely GEV based force relying on hard hitting GEV tanks, GEV-PC mounted infantry and an aggressive anti-missile laser network. For the Arab forces, I use Pan-European gear but I have several old GW Landraiders in Epic scale, these make passable SHVY (no new stats needed). It also makes my Arab forces look sufficiently different from the Europeans for visual impact purposes. I snagged some Islamic Federation infantry from Ground Zero Games to represent Arab infantry Micromachines tanks can also make passable HVY tanks for another minor power (China?) I also have a fair number of VTOLs and Jet Bombers, so I may convert Greg Costikyan's Continental Siege Aircraft rules to O:M. I am looking at my Eldar grav tanks and Renegade Legion grav tanks as the basis for high tech aliens (I am considering a Traveller/OGRE cross-over set in the 2300's) with Classic Battletech Clan Elemental infantry (same scale as OGRE) standing in for the alien troopers I am still working on the stats for the aliens but my goal is to be able to use my entire 6mm collection in OGRE games |

Re: The unofficial new units thread
We (meaning I) need names and wonder which faction are these Ogres on the side of? Not likely Combine or Pan Euro (I'm pretty sure the ogre-logical niches for those two are filled by other models in those armies).
OK, strike that last, the first one is sort of a mass production-Ninja: more fire-power but without the ECM. The other is like a Mark-III moded for missile fire-support. Still, I'd go with Africa, India (locally modified Combine imports), or Russia (which really should be it's own nation-state, not part of the Pan Euros. IMHO, of course. --Francisco |

Knight Rider
Occupant: 1 (plus 5 others - but cramped, 6 if one is Gary Coleman). Armor: 20 strength. Weaponry: Cool whoosh whoosh thing that can do anything dealing with electronic espionage. Speed: 185 mph on a good road, 50 mph on a crappy road and 5 mph off-road (except 300 mph for short distance if flying) Paint Job: Impossibly dark black. |

Re: The unofficial new units thread
The Saharan Combat Zone was one of the major fields of battle in the Last War. Blasted, irradiated, dead and sprawling over 3/4 of the African continent it was fought over back and forth by the major powers because it was better to have their armies slug it out over there than back at home. Large flat wastelands make ideal terrain for GEVs, and one of their running furballs could wander across hundreds of kilometers as everyone tried to out-flank everyone else.
In this environment, defense-in-depth quickly became an article of faith, which only encouraged the belligerent powers to break the stalemate anyway. Obviously, the answer was a faster GEV. The original attempts involved modified Raptors and Galahads with bigger engines. It turns out it's not that simple and these proved marginal successes at best, not worth the extra expenditure of resources. In the end, for the sake of commonality with their forces in other theaters, both the Combine and Paneuro's decided to make due with current designs. The end. Or not. The Arabian Confederation, unable to build their own Ogres and desperate for anything that might give them an edge decided to build from scratch. It was a huge undertaking for their industrial base but the SCZ was the Confederacy's only battleground: they could afford to build a desert-specialist force (in fact, they couldn't afford not to). Arabia's factional actional politics nearly killed the SGEV in it's planning stage, but the decision was finally made to go ahead because the Arabian soldiers, generals and politicians just liked anything that went really fast. It took too long and it cost too much. Bribery, corruption and at least one murder plagued the project but when it was done the ACAF had a powerful new weapon in the hands of men who were arguably (man-for-man) the best GEV-jockeys of the whole war. Strike GEV [SGEV] Attack : 3/1 Defense: 1 Move : 5/4 Size : 2 VP : 6 (5.43333 Henries) The main advantage of the SGEV over a regular GEV is, of course, it's greater speed. It has the same strike and retreat range but it can get where it's needed sooner. Separate forces can converge faster and they can do more damage when they get there. However it's shorter ranged weapons make it easier to screen against -- you only need half as many infantry to guard a ring around a howitzer. It's also a 6VP units with all the raw staying power of a LGEV. It won't fare well against other GEVs 1-on-1, a lot of it's firepower is "wasted" and its speed advantage isn't that much greater on a small map. This is probably the strongest argument against this design. A mixed GEV/SGEVs versus an all GEV force is another matter, especially if you're using the GEVs to support the SGEVs in a breakthrough. I think of an SGEV is a regular GEV's balanced design taken to a fast eggshell-n-sledgehammer extreme. It shouldn't be surprising that a specialist design is less able in certain roles. --Francisco |
