[3e] Sloop Flying Dragon (pirate ship)
The Sloop Flying Dragon (TL5, 1719)
When British rule was established over New Providence in the Bahamas in 1718, the small-time pirate Edmund Condent fled the island in a sloop. The sloop is typical of the craft used by the majority of pirates during the "golden age" of piracy. Displacing 150 tons, the 52-foot long vessel had a beam of 18 feet, and carried 10 guns (minions, or 3-4 pdrs), plus a crew of anything from 50-75 men. Subassemblies: Body +6 with Mediocre lines, one 54' Mast +1, one 48' Mast +1. Powertrain: 5,476 sf of Cloth Sails in a Barquentine Rig. Occupancy: Up to 75 (Minimum 3 sailors and 1 driver). Cargo: 15 tons. Armor: 3/5W overall Body: Navigation instruments, 10 bunks, 1 cabin, galley, 25 hammocks (assumes "hot bunking"), 2,250 man-days provisions, 5,280-lb. capstan (2.74-ton crane with 12-man 2.64-kW muscle engine). Statistics: Size: 52'x18'x62' Payload: 39 tons Lwt.: 79 tons Volume: 7,100 cf. Maint.: 71 hours Price: $79,336 HT: 9. HPs: 3324 Body, 75 Main Mast, 60 Fore Mast. wSpeed: 16 wAccel: 1.4 wDecel: 1 wMR: 0.05 wSR: 5 Draft: 8'. Flotation Rating: 202 tons. Design Notes: Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 5 Standard Wood. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. Mast heights were determined from an illustration of the ship. Volume was calculated using the Builder's Old Method. Empty weight is 79,846 lbs. Calculated draft was 4', this was doubled as I feel the GURPS Vehicle design system is off by a factor of 2. The length to beam ratio was only 2.88; this was generously rounded to 3 to provide the ship with Mediocre Lines. The volume of the capstan was disregarded in the hull volume as it is on deck. Provisions are enough for 75 men for 30 days; at this TL, rations typically spoil after 30 days (p. VE78).
