Sniper and target barrels are already pretty thick and heavy, making the gun pretty muzzle-down anyway, I"d think. Adding more might not make much difference.

Consider a 1" tube of steel 24" long. It's already pushing 7 lbs just for the barrel. Most of that weight is pretty far out past the grip and stock.

Not sure we really need too much more!

I heard that a significant number (though likely a minority nonetheless) of pre-collapse-era snipers said that muzzle weights (in the form of a shtick-knife) improved accuracy. No cites, sorry.

The Winchester BOSS system supposedly improved accuracy by putting a weight at a very specific point on a barrel. This was to alter harmonics so that the bullet always left the barrel at the same point in the sine wave (. I guess any weight (including a bayonet) on the barrel could stumble into this effect.

(Incidentally, did BOSS really work?)

The Idea was to decrease the vibration as a whole so that the muzzle deviated less.
Shorter barrels are always more accurate if all other factors remain the same simply because they are stiffer.

...and hanging a weight off of the muzzle can cause huge POI shifts depending on the weapon. Mounting a bayonet on a 91/30 can cause a shift of up to one foot at 100 yards, and they were sighted in with bayonets attached.

.. Weighted service rifles show up in DCM/service rifle competition all the time.

..both in the butt
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1...TTSTOCK_WEIGHT
..and the forearm
http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.c...5196/index.cfm

Weight eats recoil and dampens muscular shake when shooting unsupported.

BUT: A nose heavy rifle is an ill handling pig. Hard to get moving and hard to stop.

Sounds like a penalty to Bulk, and probably a change in Min ST as well.
