Default GURPS behind bars

I Am Fully Capable of Entertaining Myself in Prison for Decades If Need Be.

An article about RPGs in prison that mentions GURPS. Apparently one place where you still have trouble finding polyhedral dice.

I got to forward this to one of my players, who happens to work in prison.

(Sorry if someone posted this already or if this is the wrong board)

"He also cut out magazine pictures of attractive women to represent the four girlfriends he could have expected to rate on the outside (based, I suppose, on a calculation of one girlfriend per $125,000). This was where the spinner came in: To endow each girl-picture with a degree of agency he divided the circle into two sections, one signifying “Yes” and the other “No,”"

Mary Sue NPC's and no bell curve!?

Default You never know where you're going to find a GURPS reference...

...and this one caught me completely by surprise.

Thought provoking article. Never thought of RPG's as a means to survive incarceration before but why not..?

I'm told any dice can be an issue in some prisons, depending on whether the regime classes them as "gambling paraphernalia" or some similar form of contraband. It wasn't that long ago that the HM Prison service made a concerted attempt to all but eliminate the flow of books into the UK's prisons.

This is where polyhedra can actually be an asset, as they aren't as typically associated with gambling. Presuming you can get any.

Considering that people can make randomizers out of just about anything, including externalities like flights of birds, it seems a little futile.

This guy definitely wants to be Hunter S. Thompson, to the extent that I find his writing style seriously grating. Does he really need to mock the other gamers? He is also a guy playing D&D in prison, which seems to make him exactly as much of a loser as the others. Or go on for most of the article about stuff that doesn't relate to the topic? I assume that his other blog posts go into detail about the espionage contracting business, since blogging about it is supposedly what got him in trouble in the first place; why does the article about RPGs in prison have more words about Themis than GURPS?

At any rate I think the game where the PCs are the Nixon cabinet with super powers is potentially cool in a gonzo way.

I understand that another issue in most prisons, is that the administration works very hard to make sure no prisoner has a status greater than any other, because that creates all sorts of problems.

As such, it's difficult for them to allow one prisoner to act as the GM of a game -- because even being the "first among equals" in a collaborative game, can be problematic.

Because most prisoners lack Internet access, we (SJ Games) receive written letters from prisoners asking for GURPS rules clarifications. We probably get one every few months, though sometimes it's more frequent. When that happens, Kromm or I answer them in the form of a letter for the Austin crew to print out and mail back to the jail or prison.

Just thought y'all might find that interesting.
