I felt it might be something you should share with others - turns out I was right. :-)

Hey, I love trolls- just the green warty ones, not the more common internet variety. :)

No. Trolls are cool. I have them in my current fantasy campaign.

The idea was to set up some social action around a bare arena. I had established a heavy gambling culture in the guild years ago when setting up rules for proficiency runs; the ranking guild members were so heavily invested in the side bets on the adventuring teams that they could not afford to let the teams fail due to outside interference and had to investgate an admin slain by kobolds without violating the terms that would allow the bets to stand.
When Vilgar's got raided, they had to rescue Lepkur to keep the book from being stolen. I found that having compulsive gambling is a character trait that explains a reason for adventuring, like greed and impulsivity.

Very cool. It also occurs to me that some people might do it to "pay the bills." I actually used to do this sort of thing (brawl with someone else for money in a "ring") when I was younger to pay the rent and it's a lot more common than you think. People love bloodsport more than they let on - it's a visceral thing that appeals to our baser natures I think.
