[Tactical Shooting]Semi-Auto to selective fire
Hello,
Tactical Shooting gives rules for converting semi-auto weapons to full-auto, in which case they get a new ROF with a !. In the real world, is it possible through further gun-smithing to add selective-fire options to such a conversion? What would it cost, weigh, etc.? Thanks for any/all replies. |

Giving a weapon selective fire capability is a lot more complicated unless dealing with a civilianized version of a firearm that is selective fire in military use i.e. turning an AR-15 "back" into an M-16. If there is no normal selective fire version you'll probably have to _design_ several internal componets and make room for them inside the gun. You'll also need to modify the two-position control of a semi-gun from "Safe-On" to a three postion "Safe-Semi-Full" configuration. The one thing I can tell for sure is that this will add no significant weight. The parts involved are all very small. It's much more dificult than the simple ROF! conversion. There's a fairly difficult Engineering Skill roll instead of the simple Armory roll in the ROF! cioversion. Almost certainly a full workshop and weeks if not months of time instead of a single part and a simple disssaessembly. It's going to cost you more than buying yourself a gun that came in a Selective Fire version from the manufacturer even at black market prices. Maybe a lot more. It's more like designing (or gadgeteering) as variant of an existing gun than a modification.

Re: [Tactical Shooting]Semi-Auto to selective fire
The complexity and viability of such a conversion is going to vary widely depending on the weapon itself.
HK family weapons (MP5,G3 and such) can be converted to full auto with a "Sear pack" full auto trigger group. AR type weapons can be converted by dropping in M16 parts and a DIAS (drop in auto sear). Making a DIAS would be easy for anyone with a lathe. Alternatively, many AR lowers are one tiny hole away from being able to accept select fire parts. Semi Auto: http://mcb-homis.com/blog/trigger-animation.gif Select fire: http://mcb-homis.com/blog/m16animation1ww1.gif Converting a semi-auto AK clone will involve punching a hole for the 3rd axis pin (often the pin hole is even pre-located with an indentation) and dropping in the select fire parts. Trivial. A select fire glock is a couple hours for a fair machinist. http://www.gunlistings.org/nevada-gu...elect_fire_kit Its not to terribly hard to convert most semi-auto rifle to full auto either since John Norrel (and others) did all of the design work decades ago. The later ones had their mechanisms specifically re-designed to make it difficult to convert to full-auto-only or selective fire. |

something to keep in mind. It is actually harder to make a semi auto than it is to make a full auto.
