Half Elf outlaw from the future!
So, I'm going to be playing a fantasy RPG (it's anything but generic) and I want to play a half-elf outlaw from the future, came back to the past because of a time-wizard, who he later killed. campaign is TL 4, stuff I want is TL 6. the idea is to make a gunslinger type character who uses magic to make guns and ammo. not magical guns, just normal guns and ammo. I'd like to find a way to do it so it's permanent (the transform object spell could work, but it wears off :P)
Ideas? |

Which magic system is in use? By the sound of things, it's Basic Set/Magic-type spells-as-skills magic, but I could be wrong.

Hmm... Maybe Snatcher, Specialized to TL6 guns or ammo, with a Magic powmod?

Re: Half Elf outlaw from the future!
Create Object is available, but it requires the character to know how to make the object himself. Now, at TL6 there were gun users who still produced their own ammo, but I don't think it's likely they'd be able to do the entire work needed to make a pistol. Additionally, it's a hard spell, requiring a lot of specialization in magic.
My way to do this would simply be to have a powerful Patron, with unusual reach in time and space and who provides invaluable equipment. That's costly too, of course (+200% to the basic Patron value just for those two enhancements), but you can offset that by having a Duty. For the "magic" special effect, maybe this Patron is an Elf deity, nature spirit etc.; so maybe the character can use magic, but under a Pact limitation. Keep in mind that simply being from a higher TL also costs character points. |

Re: Half Elf outlaw from the future!
There are a couple of different ways:
#1 - Take Higher TL (6) [10 points], Armoury TL6 (Small Arms), and the Create Object spell. That is straight up the most 'RAW' way to it in DF. Note your guns and ammo will only last at most 24 hours, as that is the maximum for Created things DF (as per Pyramid 3-60 Dungeon Fantasy III, Wizardry Refined). It also means you can make different guns based on what you need... so rifles or shotguns or pistols. However if your GM balks at that... #2 - Innate Attack, Gadget limitations, probably with Limited Use 6 (Slow Reload) -5% and Power Modifier (Magic) -10%. However #2 is likely to actually end up costing less points... I offer both of these as you say you want to have made them via magic, and magical creations are not permanent in DF. |

Re: Half Elf outlaw from the future!
If it takes them actual time and resources to create the said weapons, just call it two levels of high TL and Gadgeteering (Focused, guns and ammo, eyeballed at -20%) of either level, plus the skills required.
If it’s more of the sort of "snap fingers and a gun appears", then Snatcher would probably fit the bill better, maybe with a limitation similar to the one above, seemingly at around -15% for snatcher.

Re: Half Elf outlaw from the future!
Unfortunately the Create Object spell won't quite work for the ammo. The spell only lasts while you hold the object, so once the bullet leaves your gun, it disappears. Transform Object, as you noted, lasts an hour, so you could use it to make ammo if you do so in a timely manner...
Some other possibilities using Magic: Shape Metal could help you craft your gun or bullets if you have the right TL6 skills; Rebuild could make a gun or bullet from a fragment (very expensive in energy costs); Inspired Creation could help you make quality guns and bullets even if your Armoury skill is low; Lend Skill could allow you to work with a team of TL3 craftsmen by lending them your TL6 skills. |

A Cornucopia item could be useful for pulling out ammo, though I'm fuzzy on the details, such as how long the ammo would last once it's loaded into a lever-action repeater.

Re: Half Elf outlaw from the future!
My two cents. I'd take TL and Armory, it would give your character a more grounded sense of coming from a higher tech world and knowing how his technology works. It would mean that you need to be your own alchemist/blacksmith, really you'd have to put points into the every part of the buffalo because your technology doesn't exist here, but it creates a more convincing representation of the backgorund.
Also just my personal take, part elf and part time-traveller, it would be hard for me not to play that character as annoyingly smug and preachy. You come from a Victorian age, likely one post-magic or sufficiently advanced magic. You'd just scoff at anyone who's waving their hands and shouting power words like they're cavemen. It would be psychotic that simple common pre-industrial conveniences were just not in this world like "Oh my god you don't wash your dishes with soap?" "That's on the other side of the city, you're really going to walk?", "Wait... there's no maid? Do you just clean up every little mess yourself? How do you get anything done?" but more hilariously I'd constantly drone on about how barbaric they were for not adopting technologies that failed shortly after my time like "You'd best get used to slavery, it is going to be the foundation of every great empire in the future.." or "Where I come from we have serums to treat those diseases made from the miraculous drug heroin.." |
