Just from a cursory analysis of the maps scans I do see out there and from reading the history. the 1st edition map was 2 columns wider and 3 hexes longer, and some craters and ridges were slightly repositioned.

I'm curious why the map was reduced for the 2nd edition. Did playtesting reveal that one side had more of an advantage with a larger surface area?
probably more to shorten the game. The longer map didn't serve any useful function; just a dead turn of "I go, you go" with nobody doing anything.

That'd be my guess. 2 hexes wider means more places to dance around scraping off units, and makes it that much harder to corner the Ogre to put a hurting on it before it breaks through / gets away again. 3 hexes longer adds two or more turns [assuming a base of M3] to the total length of the game.

Changes from the 1st edition to the 2nd edition could be summed up as follows.
  • Smaller map : pro-defense
  • Increasing heavy tank from M2 to M3 : pro-defense
  • Decreasing 2nd GEV move from M4 to M3: pro-Ogre
  • Changing armor unit purchase from combat factors to units: pro-defense
  • CRT change changing 4 result on 1-2 to NE from D: pro-defense
  • Infantry can cross rubble: pro-defense
  • Ogre needs at least 1 undestroyed AP gun to reduce infantry in an overrun: pro-defense

So it seems the Ogre might have been winning more often than not in the 1st edition.

I'm not sure ordinary users can do that. I don't have a paperclip in my toolbar, and the "Posting Rules" box at the bottom of each page says "You may not post attachments."
