You have good memories! This carnival is a little different – it's more about mixed blessings than curses, and the focus is less on items than on activities.

Yep, it's a joke. It'll make sense to those who've read the supplement. ;)

Oh, I think you could make the Carnival a lot more evil than it is. Really, it's less "evil" than "disturbing" right now, but if you want to change that, just add more clowns.

A member of Denver GURPS proposed a Dark Carnival game years ago that sadly never got off the ground, and my proposed PC was loosely based on Electra and Iphigenia from Geek Love. They were in sync enough that it was almost entirely advantageous, with four arms, four legs, 360-Degree Vision, Extra Attack x1, Extra Head x1, Compartmentalized Mind x1, and the strength of two preteen girls, contributing to the show mainly as singers and piano players.

Nice cheeky adventure location!

This brought back memories of a Ravenloft product, Carnival, which was also one of the best-written products of that 2nd Ed. D&D line.

It could be, looking it up it's a different Unicode character, so unless whatever you're using to read/search is smart enough to know to treat it as a normal t, which is doubtful, it'll cause problems.

Yeah but how often are you going to have to search for the word "Token"? In a long book it might get annoying trying to remember where, though you could just copy/paste into your search. But in this supplement I found it fun enough once I got the joke. Also when I first read it the phrase jumped out at me so it was easy to remember the concept.

I always rather liked the idea of the Jack of Tears and his carnival from Sword & Sorcery's Shattered Lands, but the implementation of it it, especially in "that RPG" was disappointing.
And earlier versions of Warhammer had the followers of Nurgle - the god of plagues - travelling in a circus caravan.

Oh carne vale ...

Probably never, although for readers looking for a reminder, there's the Contents entry on p. 2, pointing to the box where Ŧokens are defined (and the simple expedient of searching for "okens," which turns up every instance and nothing else). Otherwise, it's no better or worse than $, and the occasional use of "dollar$" and "ca$h" as a joke in many other GURPS supplements. This is a supplement where a sense of humor is required . . .
