Lowtech Armor Rules and Barding for Unusual Animals
I find myself needing to figure out how much it the barding for a number of unusual animals would weigh. Are there any places with rules for how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, how would people figure this out for the following animals? A squid twice as big as a person (assume it's a magical squid that does just fine on land) A lioness An owl or other large bird of prey (again, assume it's magically able to support the weight of the armor) |

Barding of unusual size? I don’t believe that exists.

Re: Lowtech Armor Rules and Barding for Unusual Animals
No such rules exist to my knowledge, but comparing to humans (or animals for which barding stats already exist) should get you a decent enough idea. If you have solid stats for the dimensions of the creature, I'll note that armor weight scales linearly with surface area, and a human torso (100% armor weight in LT) is around 7 square feet. So, if you know the part on your squid you want to armor has, say, a 15 sf surface area (in the case of a squid, you can probably approximate this with a cylinder, at least as long as you aren't covering the arms), barding is going to weigh ~214%, with at least the same boost in price. IIRC, this means something like DR 3 plate would weigh a bit over 17 lb and cost a bit shy of $2150. Alternatively, if you have surface area, you can just use the rules from the armor design articles in Pyramid.

Just use the Size Modifier rules from Companion 2?
So a lion is SM+1, so a lioness buying armor should get armor that weighs 2.25 and costs 2.25 human armor |
