Seems like diameter might be reasonable to use for certain strokes, but the shield surface and circumference would be more applicable to thrusts and other situations. A small shield is much more of an obstacle than a main gauche, though a main gauche is liable to be quicker... they're really different things, all being reduced to one mechanic with a large grain.
And that mechanic doesn't really match the situation - neither one is really liable to just reduce the amount of damage by one point - they're more liable to either deflect an attack or avoid a hit than to just reduce a hit's damage by a bit.
