I feel the need to nitpick.
Lizzie Borden was found not guilty. There was only vague circumstantial evidence against her to begin with. Also, she lived a quiet life afterward, something homicidal maniacs rarely do.

If all of that vague circumstantial evidence had been allowed at the trial, it is nearly certain she would have been found guilty. Neat piece of lawyering, managing to exlude both her inconsistent initial testimony and the testimony of the drugstore clerk who refused to sell her poison the day before.

Of course, that's no guarantee that she was. For one thing, modern scientific evidence might have cast considerable doubt on the time of death that the prosecution maintained. If there was no gap between the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Borden, it becomes less imperative that the murderer be someone who lived in the house.

Who called her a homicidal maniac?

If she was guilty, and I'm not saying she was, it is unlikely in the extreme that the motive was simple gibbering madness. People can be driven to murder without descending thereby into a murderous madness which makes no distinction between targets.

I heartily encourage speculation about Scott Brown, possible connections to dark supernatural forces and/or any power groups that would seek to help or hinder him.

It is all but inevitable that he'll enter into things in some way, after all. He's changing the balance of power all by his lonesome, which in an Illuminated setting means he almost can't be unconnected to them.

Ancient Middle Eastern Languages? Religious Studies? Something more specific?
Some actual courses from the harvard home site:

Comparative Study of Religion
Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
medieval (pre-1500) Middle Eastern history

and actual professors titles:

Professor of Comparative Theology
Associate Professor of the Study of Religion and of Sanskrit and Indian Studies
Lecturer on the Study of Reli*gion, Director of Undergraduate Studies
Professor of Hebrew and Other Oriental Languages

Any of those (replacing sanskri and indian by the proper ones) would fit, i think.

Professor of Jewish Mysticism (that an actual title from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.)

Hope this help.

I feel a song coming on...

Last night in old Fall River
Mister Andrew Borden died;
And they got his daughter Lizzie
On a charge of homicide.
Some say she didn't do it;
Others say, of course she did!
But all agree Miss Lizzie B.
Was a problem kind of kid;

'Cause you can't chop your papa up in Massachusetts;
Even if you planned it a surprise (a surprise!)
No, you can't chop your papa up in Massachusetts;
You know how neighbors love to criticize.

If you want somethingstrange, here's a starting point: The Great Molasses Flood. (No joke--this is for real!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses_Flood

Ghosts or haunts from the ones who drowned in molasses could be unique. Why are people falling sick from molasses cookies--but only in this area? And from all brands? You could do many things with it...and the 100 year mark is almost here.

British soldiers killed on Breed's Hill, trying again to take the hill--when the stars are right. (Or a sorcerer mad at the USA tries to invoke an enemy of America--while standing there--or at the grave of the commander of the British forces. Of course, the Battle Road is also a good place for hauntings.

The Hiddensee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiddensee_(corvette) might resent her captivity as an object for capitalist tourists, and decide to sail home...

Colonial graveyards are abundant.

And Boston Common...lots of potential. It was a training ground for the colonial militia--so a savy character could try to raise the militia if there was a supernatural threat--especially one from that era. Or the ghosts mustering and marching through the city could be the warning to the PC's of the threat.

Someone hanged unjustly there, also is an option. Or a secret hidden in Havard's library since the founding could be a factor--either finding ot hiding. (Or better--both together.) Somone hanged for witchcraft might have left something of power--or dangerous--that's only now becoming known.

A series of apparently unconnected roberys, burglaries, and murders...and IF they dig deep enough, all the victims are descendants of withces and witchcraft judges. Someone--or something--is hunting for lost secrets.

Just a few ideas from a New England Yankee...

Don't forget the Boston Strangler, the Salem Witch Trials, etc.

I grew up in Fall River, her old home and crime scene was turned into the Lizzie Borden Museum Bed & Breakfast:
