Low Tech says it's very difficult to produce in anything but tiny quantities pre-modern times. But that just makes for a less known poison. There are quite a few "blow out your liver" mushroom toxins. I remember a few incidents in years past here in Oregon. Those don't show symptoms for days to weeks while the liver dies. Plenty of time for the assassin to get away. Plenty of potential for talk of assassins when it was a "simple' mistake.
