Do you have a source for that? It isn't what I remember reading in the trades when Byrne was writing Alpha Flight. (Before you ask - no, I don't have a source for mine, either. Just my memories, and the fact that John Byrne was born and raised in England.)

Anyway... I thought we were talking about iconic supers for each country. Puck ain't an iconic Canadian super. Captain Canuck, maybe. Mr. Canoehead, almost definitely. But Puck? Not a chance.

I would have gone with a concept reflecting on precision, logic, and schematical, ordered thought. Possibly a hero with a large, slow, reliable exoskeleton with lots of powers and abilities, which all take some time preparing. Call him "Der Praktiker" (and wait for the copyright lawsuit).

Speaking as an italian guy, this character miss the point of a national super IMHO... I mean he's an interesting concept but it seems more myth based like Thor rather than a real Super... (No radiations, failed experiments, the super sort of stuff...)

Also he doesn't seems to represent "Italy" but it's history as Roman Empire... Captain America represents the ideals of current nations, not the glory of their past... Maybe Britannia is more past oriented, but UK is far more conservative than Italy is, they have still Queen\Heirs to the Throne after all... The embodiement of US ideals is a white\blonde guy, not a native american...

On the other side, after the Roman Empire, Italy didn't displayed a great hold on traditions and valors, (Well they tried with Fascism and it didn't ended that well...) and despite how much it may look bad, Italian citizens are mostly untrustful toward the Government...

IMHO a good way of creating a Italy national related hero is to create an anti-hero with some sense of duty toward the true innocents, connections with the "romantic" organized crime and disliked by both policemen and evildoers... Maybe with a super background related to radiowaves or electricity... (Based on Marconi for the first, Volta or Galvani for the latter...)

IIRC it's supposed to be both. His aesthetic is based on the sporting gear, and his personality on the legendary creature.

Right. Sorry about that.

(Although it did give me incentive to look up Mr. Canoehead...)

No cite, no. I'm just going by his characteristics: Black outfit. Short, muscular, compact and tough. Spins, tumbles, and hits hard. Absolutely no faerie-type characteristics or connections.

"Unity"
Kathem ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
Iraqi Patriot

Kathem is an aged Iraqi archeoligist born in 1938. His first memory was his parents escaping from the Brittish who had invaded and occupied Iraq to prevent it from cutting off oil to the allies during world War II. His parents, who had been minor nobility, had been involved with a resistance movement but were betrayed and forced into exile. During the six year occupation, Kathem and family travelled the middle east sometimes as guests of princes; sometimes as guests of herdsman.

When the monarchy was restored, Kathem and family returned to Iraq and Kathem started his schooling as an archeaologist and linguist. When the monarchy was overthrown by militants, Kathem was studying abroad. He was 30 when the militants were overthrown by the Baath party, Kathem was already working on several dig sites, seeking his PhD. He was 40 when Sadaam Hussein came to power - and soon Iraq was at war with Iran, a war that didn't go well for either side. He was 52 and writing books on the ancient history of Arabia when Iraqi intelligence confirmed that the country of Kuwait was slant drilling Iraq's pipelines. In response, Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait. The UN, with U.S. military, invaded Kuwait as well and forced a ceasefire and the giving up of lands ceased.

Kathem was 64 and mostly retired when the United States invaded his country without warning or UN resolution.

During the rebuilding, the new installed government came to Kathem with some interesting news: some ancient ruins were discovered - opened up during the shock and awe bombing of the Americans. Kathem was more than interested. What he discovered was a ring of the ancients allowing its user to command a powerul djin...

The Djin that apeared nearly gave him a heart attack. After a test of Kathem's faith and heart, the Djin heard Kathem's heart's wish - for a united prosperous and peaceful Iraq. The Djin laughed, "unity and peace can only be acquired by those who seek it... BUT I shall make you capable of granting your own wish."

Kathem spends his days as a professor of archaeolgy and history at the University of Baghdad. At night after his evening prayer he puts on the ring of the Djin and points it to the west and is transformed into the Djinn-man
version of himself with great power over air.

Power Notes: Kathem can create little tornadoes that carry his foes away in a world wind or suck the air from someone's lungs (choking them) - in either case, the opponent does get to dodge and then resist with strength. The tornadoes block line of sight and make it very difficult to hear anything while within them. They are guided, though, so even if you dodge them once they
may come around for another pass.

Kathem can shrink down to .002 inches - a little bit smaller than a plant cell, allowing him to go through cracks in doors or lose himself on pretty much any item to be carried into another room.

Djinn's are normally invisible. It requires great effort for Kathem to become visible. This has so far been quite a bane to his efforts to talk sense into politicans or to make appearances to unite the Iraqi people. He
has is always on the lookout for those who can see him (mages!) in the hopes they can help him in his plight.

Kathem can cause items to come into existence (snatcher) - these are shadowy djinn versions of the item they represent and disipate within a day.

There's some other fun stuff too.

Tactics: Kathem can listen into conversations easily enough; find the bad politicians and turn over their secrets to the good politicians... If he needs to make a big statement (say against a garrison of American commandos)
can go pretty much anywhere and just start throwning people around at 80mph into walls or out "thataway." Because he is diffuse, most normal attacks are not serious to him. If he is seriously challenged he can fly away and shrink to where very few will be able to track or follow him. If he is knocked unconcious, he immediately reverts back to a fully conscious and unharmed professor or archaeology...hopefully he wasn't flying at the time or
shrunken inside a crack in a door when this happens...

Personality: Kathem is a devout muslim and currently a believer in a united Iraq. He is desparately seeking a way to make a difference that won't have horrible consequences.. If there are many other supers, he will quickly learn
to bide his time since his abilities are much better for the intrigue than for duking it out with supers!

Great idea, thanks for sharing. One nitpick: There's no way those Vows are worth a combined [-20]; I'd call it Disciplines of Faith (Devout Muslim) [-5].

The Fusion
Mexican Patriot

1361 died in the Laguna Verde nuclear incident. Lt. Colonel Miguel Juarez had fired the shot that did it. The destructor robot had laid waste to the Mexican country side with its nuclear energy death rays designed to irradiate and create a TRUE American/Mexico border in the way of radioactive no man lands.. When it turned to "recharge" at the Lugana Verde nuclear plant, the Colonel had led brave men and women to shut down the reactor, but destructor killed and and killed again... the robot began to tear directly into the fission chamber to absorb and recharge.. The colonel, terribly wounded and left for dead, managed to - at the last moment - fire the magic bullet into the robot's now-open recharge vents - and it....WENT OFF. In a nuclear reaction never before seen, those 1361 - including Miguel...died.....and were reborn - fused into one...

The Fusion is what is left - a superhero loyal to the Mexican government - who works for them to bring down super villains and deal with the aftermath of the robot destructor.

Powers: The Fusion can take the shape of any of those who died in the incident. The body of The Fusion is controlled by one of the personalities of those who died in the incident. They are all driven by colonel Juarez's driving force and loyalty to the Mexican government. A "chorus" of those personalities is often in discussion - talking with itself - deciding what they should do next. The dominant personality at any given time has the ability to control the body. Mainly the body is amazingly regenerative; if totally destroyed, it reforms a few minutes later somewhere nearby. It is also completely immune to radiation and explosions.

The Fusion may access and implement abilities and talents into the current dominant personality -any one mundane 15pt (or less) advantage and up to 2 skills learned by those involved in the fusion can be accessed.

Finally, the fusion can pull iself into two beings for short periods of time.
