The Canadian firm that's one of my clients uses "U.S.$" as the abbreviation. I've never seen "U$" before.

But in the United States, we just put "$" and read it as "dollar." And since GURPS is published in the United States and its units of measurement are consistently American-centric, I read $ as "dollar" in GURPS books, unless I make a conscious effort not to.

Of course, it's a GURPS dollar anyway, not a real world monetary unit. It just happens to be named after a real world monetary unit.

That would be true of GURPS, but;

Yeah, commonly I see US$ or U.S.$, if they don't just spell out "American Dollars" (As in "This machine does not accept American Dollars", trying to stop travelers from stuffing paper in the credit card slot :P )

Google uses USD, CAD, and AUD (based on the country code, and D for Dollar).
