There are feral emus in the US. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/721086/posts

"PAWS stated that they would not respond to this incident until Monday due to the fact that the last officer who attempted to pick up an emu ended up being hospitalized from injuries sustained during the fight,'' Jenks wrote in a police report.

That link doesn't prove feral. It looks more indicative of a recetnly escaped or abandoned pet/livestock.
But without humans, it's not impossible for them to go properly feral.

Have you seen what we eat? America's favorite pastime is creating unique obituaries.

And for zoo animals who have become used to looking to humans for food, anything could happen.

I could see a troop of orangutans living in the branches of one of those trees with the humans on the ground and both tolerating the other for the benefits provided. For a time. If the humans provide the food during the lean times... that might be enough.
That is actually another good point. Hmmm.

Not that it matters... but I'd like to point out where the "Florida Man" meme comes from. Florida gives our press almost complete access to our criminal records, so unlike other states, our crazier and stupider human tricks always make the news.

But yeah, "Florida Man killed by pet cassowary" did really happen just a few months back. The lesson to take away from Florida Man kids is, Don't Do Dat.

Now you know.

It's the sun. Having just got back from two weeks in Volusia county, I'm gonna say that the combination f high temperatures, high humidity, and stupid sun combine to melt one's brains.

Pah! People in the US have pet saltwater crocodiles. Now that's insane. Cassowaries are small fry compared to that.

It turns out that in captivity, Cuban crocs are even more dangerous than salties. They're more terrestrial, and will chase you down on land as well as from the shore. And yes, some Americans own those as pets, too.

Not to mention grizzly bears, tigers, lions, cougars, Cape buffalo, wolves, reticulated pythons, chimpanzees, spectacled cobras, puff adders, black mambas .... Some Americans keep those as well.

There's also all the hybrids in captivity and even the wild. Most have health problems precluding any long term survival without human assistance. But a few hybrids don't have that issue as much.

Many wolves are now part dog and even coyote.
So post apoc., any behavior possible for one could be realistically seen in any wild population.
