Another thought I had, maybe if they can't add all the weird units they could add a way to make and use custom units in the game. A Custom Unit Editor if you will. Then you could use that to playtest units to your hearts desire. Want the weird units from Ogre book 1st ed, add them using the Custom Unit Editor! Find something crazy on the web you would like to try out on the battlefield? Use the Custom Unit Editor! Not happy with the current Ninja rules? Plug in an earlier (or even newer) version of the Ninja stats into the Custom Unit Editor!

Feature: Move stack, limited by the shortest movement unit in the stack.

Units: Light GEV, GEV-PC, Hovertruck. This would allow infantry to "get in the game" in a mostly-GEV hit and run scenario.

Terrain: Beach.

Generally that is too late. The expected trend is less players over time.

On the other hand, I didn't see any significant release hype - I'm pretty sure I never saw Ogre on the Steam front page, for instance.

Less release-day surge would give more weight to all things long tail.

Gotta fix Asynchronous play.
Gotta be able to start a game whether the other player is online now or not.
Gotta be able to play against another opponent over several days.
Need to be able to define how long to allow between turns.

Without these, playing against another live player will be difficult.

This probably shouldn't be an option for ranked matchmaking, since it would be easy to abuse.

How would you picture deployment working if you could start a game while your opponent is offline? I'm not sure it would be possible in the current framework given you need to be part of a shared lobby before advancing to deployment, and need an established defender and attacker.

Thanks

That sounds like a shortcoming in the Steam structure. I find it hard to believe Steam has no facility for truly asynchronous play. :-(

Agreed. Standard Ogre/GEV setup indicates the rules for deployment each player has to follow (so both sides know them) and then one side deploys, followed by the other. There's no need to have both players online while one side or the other deploys, unless that's a Steam thing.

Heck, it's theoretically possible to have player 1 set up his forces first before even accepting an opponent, assuming the opponent is willing to accept playing the side that sets up second. I've done that at events where I have a defense set up and am just waiting for a player for the Ogre...

Yup. In fact, that's necessary to stay sane at Cons when you are running "learn to play Ogre" sessions with multiple tables. Game ends, reset the table in preparation for the next recruit. :-)

It's also the norm for vassal games and PBEM; One person starts by setting up, then sends the file to the other side, who takes their turn. I'm _very_ surprised a similar PBEM model doesn't exist in Steam.
