Inscape is free, and available for Mac, although it does require some learning. It's not a dedicated map-making program but vector-based graphics software.

Thanks Jurgen, I've just installed Inscape and will give it a go shortly.

This site has some good info for making hex maps with inkscape. If I can find where I put my template with Thorf's tiles, I'll post that too.

Arcane Mapper is on Early access at Steam.

Looks promising.

MapForge is easy to learn/use, and has both Mac and Win versions.

v1.0 should be out in February or March 2018. However, the initial release won't have built-in support for hexgrids. That will have to come later.

It can but you have to jump a few hoops to get it to print out at 1 inch hexes = 1 yd. Less user friendly than I'd like for that but usable.

Just a quick update to let people know that hexgrids were added to MapForge last year, and a snap-to-hex feature was added this year.

Hex tile content Add-Ons are currently being developed and should be released in April, at which point MapForge will become a great tool for quickly putting together great-looking hex maps.

Based on what I saw, all the hexgrid content was all for outdoor maps. Do you know if when they plan on adding interior hexgrid content? Star-map hexgrid content?

How hard is it to take your dungeon interior made with square-grids, then eliminate the square-grid guide lines and overlay a hexgrid?
