Never back in your hand. You can only pick up items you are able to carry.

Right. Otherwise someone could simply drop an item from his backpack, and then pick it right back up and put it into his hand.

Once in play, always in play.

To be clear, you can't pick up an Item you dropped on your current turn. You have to wait until at least your next turn before you pick something up. Of course, I don't see any indication in the rules that says that it has to be put right back into play, and even though I, in principle, will always pick the stay-in-play option if I have to make a gut ruling, I would hope to get some clarification from the PTB on this one before I make an official declaration.

I don't think this is correct. The rules say:

Doesn't that imply that you can pick up something you dropped on the same turn (assuming you have enough move to do so) unless something says otherwise?

I was looking for what I thought said that if you drop something intentionally, you can't pick it up, but I can't find it. It must have been a card that I'm remembering.

Yeah, there's one or two cards I know of that say you have to wait until next turn ("Hole in Pocket" or "Ripped Backpack" iirc).

But you're right -- I don't see anything in the rules that specifically says picked up items stay in play or not.

There is a rule that says once an item is put into play, it can never be put back into your hand.

This is, however, a situation that is recognizably different than you taking something you have in play right now and putting it back in your hand. If I search an empty room and find Treasure, do I have to put those cards in play immediately? No. So, trust me, I always lean to in-play stays in play, but I don't see the rule you're referring to as a complete catch-all and I'm in the process of getting a clarification.

The intent is that Items picked up from a stack of dropped Items are to remain in play. I was fairly confident of this (and how I would have ruled in a situation where I was actually playing), but I felt it important to make sure on this particular issue.
