No, no. I understand that. I simply meant "semi-official" as "someone who knows a lot more than I do."

To be fair, if he didn't know the rule, and the table agreed with his reasoning, he's not cheating. Yes, the game didn't end by an official method, but the winner shouldn't be punished unless he intentionally misled you.

In your situation, I'd just mention to everyone the mistake you made in the previous game so that you can play correctly from now on. That seems to be the most friendly approach.
