Re: Sanity/Mythos Fright check in CthulhuPunk
I played a lot of Cthulhu adventures with GURPS rules and I always used GURPS Fright check rules as they are written in the Basic Set, not in Cthulhupunk. Why? For a very simple reason...
In Call of Cthulhu, you can create your character in something like 15 minutes. So, no matter if this character becomes completely crazy after 5 to 10 adventures. Just create another character. It is even a part of the fun! With GURPS, you can create exactly the character you want to play (no dice rolls). So, the players usually spend a lot of time to create their character, to give him a past, some friends, some enemies, a family, etc. Seeing such a character becoming a definitively mad NPC is not anymore fun. Thus, I use GURPS Basic Set rules, with GURPS Cthulupunk modifiers. And, believe me, making the characters becoming mad is not the only way to make the players becoming paranoiac. They usually fear well chosen mental disadvantages! Especially when they have enough time to love their character... |

It seems more than likely that since at least the mid-90s, a lot of humanity has actually been more or less insane already by Lovecraft's standards, this being the time when mankind is 'wild and free' right before the stars come right. Why, we at least tolerate both homosexuality and miscegenation, by and large! (Note: this last written from HPL's perspective, certainly not mine) So, if you wanted to reduce or remove the penalties for dealing with more mundane threats like Deep Ones (except perhaps the realization that you yourself have the Innsmouth Look and are turning into one) and ghouls, feel free. Some of the more multidimensional, non-Euclidean horrors will probably still mess up most folks' minds, though, at least as long as they aren't mathematicians already used to thinking in terms of tesseracts, and even then you can certainly rule that those types are already demented in some way. |
