Default Copycat munchkin x-men

When you play the copycat card on a monster in xmen munchkin and the player(s) fail...do they run away twice as as if it was 2 separate monsters or just once?

I thought it should be 2 run attempts if another monster appears but some argued that the card did not explicitly state you have to run twice

Yes, "Copycat" creates a duplicate, yet both Monsters are independent. Player(s) must Run Away from both.

That's correct. You fought two distinct (but identical) monsters, so you must Run Away from both of them.
