Effective level reduced below 1

I searched the forums but got way too many results. I am sorry if this has already been answered somewhere.

The rules say that your level cannot be reduced below 1.

Can your effective level for combat be reduced below 1? If I am level 2 with no bonuses and I enter combat with a -5 from a trap or curse or something, I roll a 1 on the die is my level -2 or level 1 for the combat.

Yes.
