Default How many is too many?

Within these last months, I dove into Munchkin(Q) head first. It's the only game I can really get my wife into playing nowadays. So far I have the base box, the Extra Parts "expansion" and I am looking forward to 2 "Looking for Trouble" expansions(one tomorrow & another when SJG gets them back in.

With a game size of this potential(by my count, I could have around 8 players), I ask you... how many players do you think is the most to get together while still making the game fun? Obviously the more the better, but there has to be a limit before the game takes up too much time and space.

Well, I don't think you can actually use 2 expansion sets simultaneously, so as of now, the max that can play at one time is 6, but it sounds liek that takes quite some time. 4 I think is the optimum number though.

Since you can add the extra parts to what the base box has, I wouldn't see why 2 expansions isn't doable.

This has been discussed before. The reason you can't have more than six players is that so many rules and game mechanics are tied to monster base colors, player colors, and to the Monster Die.

With house rules to add more players to the fun:

If you have someone that is to young, or don’t know the game but wants to watch and help. You can make them the Mapmaker (only).

You can have players Tag Team one of the Munchkins. That is, two people play one munchkin character together (I don’t mean fighting a Munchkin in a wrestling match).

But, obviously the more the better, the more the longer. So it’s up to how much time do you have?

Pat

Of course, you could still use the Map Tiles from the second expansion just as you would use Extra Parts...

That's what I am looking towards initially. Then home-brew some house rules regarding more than 6 players.

What you might try is to give multiple players the same color.
And treat them as normal. Their color is rolled, they all get a card. &c.

That is unfair to people who are not sharing a color, and could break the game in other ways I don't even want to contemplate right now.

The real problem, from where I see it, is that 5- and 6-player games already tend to run longer than many people prefer. Going beyond that could very well lead to situations where you take your turn and then wait most of an hour until your turn comes around again. That is not fun, in ANY sense of the word.

Bah... the extra colors needed for for players 7-??? is a problem, as well as that would make for a single full-weekend game.

For now, I'll just stick with using the extra tiles and cards.
