Default Combining Car Wars and Family Business

A discussion on Twitter regarding RPG campaigns had a reply that stated a campaign was run that combined Car Wars with the board game Family Business. This idea sounded very interesting, therefore I created this thread. The tweets discussing the topic are presented below.

What is the craziest #RPG idea you have ever come up with?

We combined Family Business and Car Wars so that disputes between crime families were resolved in the arena but assassination of pit crew was a valid tactic.

Was sabotage of vehicles in the pits before arena events permitted in your Family Business-Car Wars campaign?

Absolutely cut brake lines , pollution in fuel tanks and slashed tyres all part of the fun

I asked about sabotage because the Underground Market in the 1996 computer game Death Rally has an option for sabotage. You should post your campaign's rules on a blog. Car Wars players would like to read them.

I'd love to but it was so long ago and some of it was made up on the fly. It just wouldn't do it justice if I tried to do a write up. I remember one player having his entire crew wiped out before he even got into his car because every other player called a hit on him. 😱

Wow! What an obscure but amazing idea! Thank you so much for sharing this Michael!

I'm curious to see how something like this would play out! I'm no stranger to Family Business and it's great fun! I wonder if he would take it to the arena whenever the "Hit List" would be filled up but prior to the death of the one "against the wall".

If I were doing a session like this, when the hit list gets filled up, I'd take it into the arena and whoever wins would get to take just their crew off of the hit list (if any) and the rest that aren't so lucky get executed there for the enjoyment of the bloodthirsty audience!

The only card in the game that would override this triggered Arena Combat would be the St. Valentine's Day Massacre card. A person that has this card may play it prior to the trigger. The unfortunates on the list, didn't make in into the arena having mysteriously "disappeared". To the dismay of the audience, that event is cancelled!

That's crazy that he allowed options for the family that wasn't driving to be pit crew members that may or may not die in the process, sabotage of vehicles, etc. I'm wondering how he went about achieving those? Sounds like a great and very unique game of CW though!

Wasn't there a write-up in _ADQ_ of some group's Club Championship where they allowed this sort of thing, and one of the competitors never made it to the arena due to a under-dash Limpet Mine?

Dec, 8, 2035 -- The Houston Free Oilers today held their bloodiest annual ritual, "The Presidential Power Duel." The duel was created to elect a president for the controversial and sometimes radical Houston-based chapter of the American Autoduel Association. Duellist Jeff Ferris emerged victorious when he accelerated to high speeds to engage the last competitor, Bill Maurer, at close range.

The annual duel has long been a source of controversy and scandal since its inception, and this year was no different. Would-be candidate Draper Kauffman was found slain in the front seat of his red '34 Hammer, which was parked in the pit area. Evidently Kauffman, who was not wearing his body armor, was killed, as he was preparing his vehicle for the election, by a limpet mine under his dashboard. According to Sheriff Grissly, the death appeared to be an assassination. He said, "They done it real clean, professional-like. He (Kauffman) never had a chance." Last year, the election was marked by violent confrontations between two of the Free Oilers' Special Interest Groups (SIGs), the Shoot Straight Slate and the Flaming Oilers.

That's the one, Thanks. (I was at the Wrong Computer to look it up for myself.)

That is amazing! I'll definitely look into getting more ADQ in the future. I've thoroughly enjoyed the two issues I've read thus far!
